Paradigm is an etude for marimba that focus on creating lyricism through technical proficiency. The performer is given which notes to play and when to change pitches. The performer should repeat the given notes through the invisible noteheads until new, traditional note changes occur. The performer should pick one technical pattern and apply it throughout the entire piece. For example, one could choose to play the double lateral pattern 1-2-3-4 at a sixteenth note pace across the given notes for the entirety of the piece. The performer may also feel free to change the order of the notes per measure, as long as the sticking pattern stays consistent throughout the piece. The end goal should be a technical mastery of the chosen permutation(s), so that the lyrical lines may be fluid, sing, and be uninterrupted by the technical challenge at hand.
